I decided to start the redesign from a proper sketch this time, completely from head and without comparing with the first version. It, uh, didn't turned out so well...
That's when I decided to ditch it and asked Daniel Soloviev about some advices towards design process. After receiving some buttkicking about that from him, I painted over several shapes based on my original model, played with outlines and proportions.
I choosen the one I liked the most, surrounded myself with shipload of references and inspirational images, and come up with this picture, which become my concept art for the model. Time to get to work.
Added some test materials
Created the Soul effect.
Accidentally rendered without materials) Turned out interestingly looking
It was around this time that I suddenly realized "oh god. I'm an idiot. I forgot to drew the backpack gun part of the concept!"
So I tried to go with the flow and deign this thing on the fly as I modeled it.

Dirt tests
Between this and the next picture is couple of months of procrastination, other work, and painfully slow and tedious unwrapping.
Test of a procedural dirt. Got rid of it after all.
Sorry, didn't make any wip screenshots of texture painting, so it is here in almost final condition already.
This and all the rest below is final subtle tweaks of textures and materials.
